Frequently asked questions

What time is sunset today?

Allow location access on this page and Solarc shows today’s sunset time for your exact position in your local time. You can also pick any city from the list below or open the interactive map.

When does it get dark after sunset?

It is not fully dark at sunset itself. Civil twilight, when you can still do most outdoor activities, runs for roughly 20 to 40 minutes after sunset. Full astronomical darkness arrives an hour or more later. Solarc shows all twilight phases inside the right-hand panel on the home page.

How accurate is today’s sunset time?

Times are computed with Astronomy Engine and agree with the NOAA Solar Calculator to within about one minute. Hills or buildings on your western horizon can make the visible sunset a little earlier than the listed time.

Why is sunset earlier in winter?

In winter, your hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, so the sun traces a shorter, lower arc across the sky and sets earlier. The effect is strongest near the solstice.
