What the five prayers anchor on

The five daily prayers are anchored to the sun. Fajr begins when the sun is a defined number of degrees below the eastern horizon before sunrise. Dhuhr begins right after the sun crosses the local meridian at noon. Asr begins when the shadow of a vertical object equals its own length plus the shadow at noon (Shafi’i / Maliki / Hanbali) or twice its length plus the shadow at noon (Hanafi). Maghrib begins at sunset. Isha begins when the sun has fallen the matching number of degrees below the western horizon after sunset, or 90 minutes after Maghrib in the Umm al-Qura convention.

Because every step is derived from sun position, the times shift every day with the seasons and depend strongly on latitude. Solarc computes them live from astronomy-engine rather than reading them from a precomputed calendar.

Frequently asked questions

What are the five daily prayers?

The five daily prayers (salat) in Islam are Fajr (dawn, before sunrise), Dhuhr (after the sun passes the local meridian at noon), Asr (afternoon, between Dhuhr and Maghrib), Maghrib (just after sunset), and Isha (night, after twilight ends). Each prayer has a defined window during which it is performed.

How are prayer times calculated?

Fajr and Isha are defined by how far the sun is below the horizon (a depression angle) before sunrise and after sunset respectively. Sunrise and Maghrib are the standard sunrise and sunset moments. Dhuhr is solar noon, when the sun crosses the local meridian. Asr is when the shadow of a vertical object equals its own length plus the shadow at solar noon (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali schools) or twice its length plus the shadow at noon (Hanafi school). Solarc computes these in real time from your latitude, longitude, and the day of the year using the astronomy-engine library.

Which calculation method should I use?

Most communities follow a regional convention. North America commonly uses ISNA, Europe and other regions use the Muslim World League (MWL), Egypt and parts of Africa use the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan use the University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi, and Saudi Arabia and the Gulf use Umm al-Qura. Solarc lets you pick any of these and shows the time differences immediately.

What is the difference between Shafi'i and Hanafi Asr?

The Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools start the Asr window when the shadow of a vertical object equals its own length (plus the shadow at solar noon). The Hanafi school starts it later, when the shadow equals twice the object's length. The Hanafi Asr is therefore later in the day, often by 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on latitude and season.

Why does Umm al-Qura use a 90-minute Isha offset instead of an angle?

The Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia historically calculated Isha at a fixed 90 minutes after Maghrib (and 120 minutes during Ramadan), rather than using a depression angle. This produces consistent local times throughout the year and matches the convention used at the Great Mosque of Mecca.

What happens at high latitudes where the sun never goes 18 degrees below the horizon?

In summer at latitudes above roughly 48°N or below 48°S, the sun stays close enough to the horizon that there is no astronomical night. Fajr and Isha become undefined by the standard angle method. Most communities follow a fallback rule: the middle of the night, one-seventh of the night, or the times of the nearest moderate-latitude city. Solarc shows the undefined values with a note so you know to apply a local rule.

How accurate are the prayer times?

Solarc uses the astronomy-engine library, the same code used across the rest of the site, which cross-checks against the NOAA Solar Calculator within about three minutes at five baseline anchor points. The depression-angle and shadow-factor calculations are exact, so the only difference versus a published local calendar is which method and Asr rule the calendar follows. Pick the matching method and Asr school to align with your community.

Does Solarc store my location?

No. Solarc requires no signup and does not store your location on its servers. The page asks the browser for your coordinates, computes the prayer times in your device, and forgets them when you leave. If you reject the geolocation prompt, you can still browse the city list or open the interactive map.
